James Windle Bell

James (Jim) Windle Bell, 78, a resident of Benton passed away Sunday, August 22, 2010 in a local hospital. Mr. Bell was a member of Old Salem Baptist Church in Delano, TN. Mr. Bell was a native of Perryville, Arkansas and attended the University of Arkansas where he received a Bachelor of Science in Journalism Degree. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in Korea. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Football Writers of America, Kappa Sigma Fraternity and National Eagle Scout Association. He received the God and Country and Silver Beaver Awards from the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Bell was a journalist for 44 years, employed by the Arkansas Democrat, Daily Oklahoma in Oklahoma City, Tulsa World, Commercial Appeal in Memphis and Chattanooga Free Press. He retired in 1998 as editor of the Dalton (GA.) Advertiser. He also served as Sports Information Director at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and the University of Arkansas. He was the son of the late John and Mildred Bell. Survivors include: brother: Dr. J William Bell & wife Paula, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; uncle: Dr. Frank Bell & wife Enda, Knoxville,TN; stepmother Lois H. Bell, Maryville, TN, niece Kari Delaney, Taos, New Mexcio, nephew's Will Bell, Boise, Ida, Burke Bell & wife Kenya, Ponte Vedra Beach Fla. three great nieces and one great nephew and several cousins. His family will receive friends Wednesday August 25, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at Old Salem Baptist Church A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 8 p.m. at the Old Salem Baptist Church with Reverend Bruce Underwood and Reverend Kinzel Hooker officiating. Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 26, 2010 at the Old Salem Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Polk County High School Football, 7200 Highway 411N, Benton, TN 37307 or the Old Salem Baptist Church, 2909 Highway 163, Delano, TN.
