Elmer Moorhouse

February 23, 1927 — December 3, 2015

Charles Elmer Moorhouse, 88, of Ocoee, TN passed away on Thursday, December 3, 2015 at a local facility.  He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Ocoee, TN and a member of Conasauga Lodge F&AM #396, Scottish Rite and the Republican Party.  He was a WW11 veteran having served in the Navy.  He enjoyed working in the garden, farming, politics and business.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Joyce Moorhouse on October 19, 2015; father, Walter and Julia Lingerfelt Moorhouse; his sisters, Stella Hall, Elizabeth Crumley, Pearl McCallum Gross and Iola Brock; brothers,  Ricahrd T. “Hot Shot” Moorhouse, Jack Moorhouse, Walter M. Moorhouse, John Henry Moorhouse, and Boyd Moorhouse.

He is survived by his children Charles E. "Byrd" Moorhouse, Jr. and wife Joyce Cronan Moorhouse, Joel Dean Moorhouse and wife Robbi Presswood Moorhouse, and Kenneth Walter Moorhouse and wife Aleta Hannah Moorhouse; five grandchildren, Walter Patrick Moorhouse, Amanda Joy Moorhouse, K.R. Moorhouse, Sydney Moorhouse Breedlove, and Joel Dean "Joey" Moorhouse, II; two great-grandchildren, Zachary Ryan Keith and Chloe Katherine Dunn; brother, William Earl Moorhouse and wife Edna; sister, Velma Massengill;  sister-in-law, Sue Campbell and husband Jimmy; brothers-in-law, Edward “Eddie” Howard and wife Judy and Elton Brock.

After returning from WW11 he and his brother “Hot Shot” entered several business ventures including a Ford Tractor Dealership, Standard Oil Dealership and local General Store.  They bought, sold and traded real estate until he opened Cherokee Corner Grocery in 1955 where he settled on the corner and remained the rest of his life.  He had a strong work ethic and managed his rental business until the day he died.  Family was the most important thing in his life.  He was an early riser and worked every day to secure a future for his family.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 pm, Thursday, December 10, 2015 in the chapel of Higgins Funeral Home, Benton, TN.  Funeral services will follow visitation at 8 pm, with the Rev. Kinzel Hooker officiating.  A private, graveside burial will be at 11:00 am on Friday, December 11, 2015 at Benton Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers are:  Walter Patrick Moorhouse, K.R. Moorhouse, Joey Moorhouse, Jimmy McDonald, Nick Breedlove and Kevin Dunn.  Barry Massengill and Brian Massengill are honorary pallbearers.
